How to write a good blog

Blogging is so 2005.  That’s why Mercury Worm certainly does not blog.  We prattle.  But around the internet there are plenty of suggestions on how to write a good blog, and how to drive traffic to your blog.  (Mercury Worm conforms to about 20% of them).  Here are some of the better suggestions:

About your blog:

  • Own your own domain
    For example, www.MercuryWorm.com.
  • Make an “About Me” section
    Explain yourself
  • Allow comments on your blog
*Preferably so people don’t have to sign up to comment*

Writing Style:

  • Update your blog daily
    Or at least regularly
  • Be friendly
    People like friendly
  • Choose a topic and stay focused
    I’ve never liked pineapple
  • Be informative and relevant
Is writing about the marshmallow plant relevant to anything?
  • Spell check
It’s a good habbit to get into
  • Use catchy headlines
Hook your readers with a strong title
  • Write in lists
Americans have a short attention span
  • Credit your sources
    It’s good netiquette
  • Don’t make it too long
What?  You get bored with my 2500 word posts about a 5 mile run?
  • End with an open-ended question
    See below…

Driving Traffic:

  • Comment on other blogs
This will, in turn, drive traffic back to your blog
  • Join blogging networks
Or get involved in some blog aggregators
  • Link to other sites and blogs
It’s a win-win situation to link to other blogs
  • Make your feed easy to subscribe to
Most blogging templates have built-in RSS

So, how many of these rules does your blog adhere to?

“Whatever comes into my head” IS a topic.

And I like people having to sign up to comment. Why should I care about some random nutjob’s opinion?
