10 Miles on Dick Woods Road

I have not done a run of more than 5 miles since late March.  Two weeks from tomorrow, I will be running the Pineland Farms Trail Challenge 25K race (that’s about 15 miles).  In other words, I am in big trouble.  So, in my attempt to not be completely out-of-shape for this race, I ran 10 miles on Dick Woods Road today.

It was a very slow run.  And I have to say, it went about as well as I could have hoped.  From the knees up, I felt good the whole time.  I had plenty of energy, and really wouldn’t have known that it’s been over a month since I’ve run more than half this distance.  I think I can attribute a lot of that to joggling.  A 5 mile joggle gives me a much better cardio workout than a 5 mile run.  Another advantage to joggling!

From the knees down, it’s still too early to call.  I will know more tomorrow morning.  We’ll see when I get out of bed if I can still stand up.  But right now, all signs are pointing to very little damage to my calves.  I have certainly felt worse after a 10 mile run.

If there was one bad thing about today’s run, it must be the songs that were stuck in my head.  Here is what I had to deal with for 10 long miles:

  • For the first five miles, I had Will You Go To Prom With Me stuck in my head.  Okay, this is my own fault.  It’s a stupid novelty song that I listened to several times because I thought it was funny.  It’s not so funny on a continuous loop for 5 miles.
  • If that’s not bad enough, the next 4 miles there was some unknown song in my head.  It’s another weird electronica song that was quite familiar to me, but I can’t place it.  The end had some organ sound that went like doo doo do do doo doo do do do doo dah.  It drove me nuts to hear that over and over again, but can’t remember the song.  Anybody have any idea what that song is?
  • But wait, it gets worse!  For the last mile, I had to put up with Hooray for Santy Claus in my head.  Yes, the theme song from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.  You know, S-A-N-T-A C-L-A-U-S, Hooray for Santy Claus!  Thank god I only had a mile left to go!
